Well the British Open gets under way this week, and in my view its one of the most wide open tournaments for a long time. Put that together with it being a links course, and the wonderful British weather it would take a genius to be able to pin point a winner this far in advance. This is a course and event that relies more on accuracy than power, and if you get into the rough you will be truly tested. The recent poor weather will only enhance the courses rough and make accuracy even more important.
In the past 18 months Tiger Woods would have been a guaranteed lay, but his recent results perhaps hints that he is on the way back? What about the boy wonder Rory McIlroy, have the feeling his thoughts may have been off the park, not you could blame him though.... Some of the bigger names have struggled recently with injuries or outside pressures, and it wouldn't be a big surprise to see a new name on the Claret Jug. I have tended to avoid a lot of Europeans, and do seem to be a little biased towards the USA.
Below is my portfolio of trading bets for this year's Open, not necessarily the winner, but hopefully it contains enough picks to enable some profitable trading to take place. I have looked for players that I believe will make the cut. Quite simple maths when you think about it, when the cut is made you loose 50% of the field, so in theory that should means that all the remaining odds should shorten up. Now some of my picks have struggled to make the cut in previous Opens, but there comes time when you need to stand up to the plate and there is no reason why these guys shouldn't progress. I would be surprised to see anybody so far out in front at the end of day 2 that the rest of the odds are not affected. My first goal would be stake recovery, then incremental lays as the event progresses.
Some things that will need to be taken into account though are things like tee times, partnerships and weather conditions, so a close eye needs to be kept on these factors. Whatever your picks, whether you are trading or backing, good luck and enjoy what promises to be some great viewing.
